Precursor of the impressionist movement, Jean-Fraçois Millet was born in the hamlet of Gruchy, near Gréville-hague, in 1814. Even if he spent most of his life in Barbizon, an artists' village near Paris, Millet's entire work depicts the rural scenes of his childhood.
In Gruchy as well as in the artist's birthplace, time has stood still Millet painted The milkmaid, The old well opposite his house, the surrounding lanes and the ramarkable Cliffs of Castel Vendon.
